Today we are going to look at creating a slot in a sheet metal cylinder.

Every year solidworks makes several enhancements to its software.
Click on the sheet.
As you would expect there are several ways to accomplish this in solidworks.
Add the cuts fold the part and use the same sketch to cut the extrusion off.
Then select the fixed face of that extrusion to do your unfold.
Right click on the toolbar and activate sheet metal.
Sketch an open contour arc.
If you don t have the sheet metal tab open right click in the area where the 1 arrow points then click sheet metal.
Select the face and convert entities then extrude 0 01 any number really just less than the width of the seam.
Single open contours can be used for extrudes revolves sections paths.
Consider a 3 foot diameter metal cylinder and how we could create this and create a flat patten using the sheet metal tools found in solidworks standard.
Make sure to grab a note pad and get ready for some quick modeling.
Flatten it by converting it using the insert bends command instead.
Now sketch and use smart dimension to give a dimension to the design.
First create a new part.
Sheet metal parts are generally used as enclosures for components or to provide support to other components.
Stop putting a small flat section on your part just to get it to convert to sheet metal.
The base flange propertymanager appears.
The arc can also be tangent to a line.
You can design a sheet metal part on its own without any references to the parts it will enclose you can design the part in the context of an assembly that contains the enclosed components or you can design the part within another part document in a multibody environment.
Click convert to sheet metal.
Enter the material thickness you want.
Enter a default inside radius for the bends.
Just add a new sketch on one of the flat end faces of the cylinder.
Click on the top plane and then create a new sketch.
In particular they have made creating complex sheet metal parts even easier.
Click base flange tab or insert sheet metal base flange.
